Sometimes, the best moments in life are the unplanned ones, and that’s exactly what happened on a trip earlier this year to New Orleans. With my husband, a United pilot, on a long overnight layover, I decided to surprise him in the enchanting city of New Orleans. My journey began with super-fast flight; he was arriving from Newark, while I hopped on a quick one from Houston’s IAH airport.

After a swift change at the hotel, the Sheraton New Orleans, we couldn’t resist grabbing a bite at the hotel bar. To our pleasant surprise, the wings were unexpectedly good, setting the tone for our adventure.

Exploring the French Quarter: Hand Grenades and Bourbon Street
Our evening took us into the heart of the French Quarter, where we explored a few bars with the newfound friends I had made on my flight. It was a Friday night, and the lively energy of Bourbon Street luckily kept me awake & moving. I decided to try my first hand grenade, a famous New Orleans cocktail. To my own amusement, it turned out that I wasn’t a fan! Nevertheless, we enjoyed some great live music and reveled in the bustling atmosphere.

A Day of Discovery: Woldenberg Riverfront Park and Love Wins NOLA Locks
The next morning, we embarked on a walking trek through the city. Our journey led us to the picturesque Woldenberg Riverfront Park, which not only offered stunning views of the Mississippi River but also introduced us to Love Wins NOLA locks—a charming tradition that allows couples to leave their own locks as a symbol of their love. Naturally, we added our own lock to the collection.

Cultural Exploration: St. Louis Cathedral and the Carousel at the Piano Bar
Our exploration continued with a visit to the historic St. Louis Cathedral, a breathtaking structure that carries a rich legacy. Lunch was an absolute delight at the Royal House Oyster Bar, where we relished in the taste of fresh oysters. But one of the most anticipated moments of our trip was finally seeing the famous carousel at the piano bar. This unique attraction is a must-see in New Orleans, and its history is as enchanting as its atmosphere.
The St. Louis Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral-Basilica of Saint Louis, King of France, is the oldest active Roman Catholic cathedral in the United States. Located in New Orleans, it boasts a rich history, dating back to its construction in 1789. This iconic structure showcases stunning French Gothic architecture with its three spires and pointed arches. Over the years, it has undergone renovations and preservation efforts to maintain its historic beauty. The cathedral continues to play a vital role in the city’s religious and cultural life, hosting various events and remaining a symbol of New Orleans.

Culinary Delights: Doris Metropolitan
Our culinary journey reached its pinnacle with dinner at Doris Metropolitan, an exquisite restaurant that we already loved from its Houston location. Doris Metropolitan is a celebrated upscale restaurant in New Orleans, known for its innovative fusion of culinary influences, including steakhouse classics, Mediterranean, and Middle Eastern flavors. The restaurant offers a diverse menu featuring steaks, seafood, lamb, poultry, and vegetarian options. It provides an elegant and sophisticated ambiance, an extensive wine list, and exceptional service. Doris Metropolitan has received numerous awards and recognition for its culinary excellence, making it a top dining destination in the city.

Homeward Bound
As the day came to a close, we headed back home, carrying with us the memories of great food, rich history, and vibrant culture that New Orleans had generously offered us. It was a whirlwind adventure—a testament to the beauty of spontaneity and the magic of the Crescent City. ✈️⛪️⚜️
