Quick Layover in Panama City, Panama

Hello, fellow travel enthusiasts! It’s your wanderlusting wifey, Seena Patel, here with another adventure to share. I joined my hubby on a quick layover in Panama City, Panama, checking another country off my ever-growing bucket list.

End-of-Year Status Run

End-of-year status runs are my thing. You see, I’m on a mission 😉 to reach my desired Mileage Plus status with United each year which calls for some fun end-of-year trips. I needed more PQPs (Premier Qualifying Points) and PQFs (Premier Qualifying Flights). Naturally, I opted for the big leagues – first class all the way. After a 3.5hr flight, a quick 16 hour layover awaited us in Panama City, and trust me, we made every second count.

Pro Tips for International Layovers

When traveling with crew internationally, always pack a carry-on and be ready to move fast. And I mean really fast. Crew members aren’t required to get to the airport until 1 hour before departure in most cases, so efficient navigation through security and customs is key. In the U.S., memberships like CLEAR, Pre-check, and Global Entry make the process even smoother. Panama, for instance, has 2 security checkpoints, and had I not planned properly, it could have been an issue, even with a paid ticket. Sometimes that even means taking an earlier shuttle or taxi to the airport. Oftentimes, international airports have special entry points for crew members and it’s very easy to get behind at security as a passenger. Key is to plan ahead and just give yourself extra time if you’re unsure.

A Glimpse of Panama City

Our layover in Panama City was super short, but we made the most of it. Unfortunately, due to a minor delay and rush hour traffic, seeing the Miraflores Locks was a no-go; it would have been dark. Next time for sure.

Panama City is steeped in history, with the famous Panama Canal and the iconic Miraflores locks being key landmarks. The city’s cultural influences are diverse, with a rich blend of Asian and Italian heritage adding a unique flavor to the culture.

After a quick change of clothes, we hopped in a taxi and headed to Old Town Panama. This area is a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of the city, exuding an old-world charm and European vibe. It was fun to see and learn more about its history and charming architecture.

Old Town Panama

Old Town Panama, known locally as “Casco Viejo” or “Casco Antiguo,” is a historic and charming district located in Panama City.

Historical Significance: Old Town Panama is one of the oldest and most historically significant parts of Panama City. It was founded in 1673 after the original Panama City, known as Panama Viejo, was destroyed by pirate attacks. The district was designed with a well-planned layout of narrow streets, squares, and colonial-style buildings.

Colonial Architecture: One of the most striking features of Old Town Panama is its well-preserved colonial architecture. The buildings feature a mix of Spanish, French, and Italian influences, with ornate balconies, colorful facades, and charming courtyards. Strolling through the streets feels like stepping back in time.

Historical Landmarks: The district is home to several historical landmarks and attractions. Some of the notable sites include:

  • Cathedral Basilica of St. Mary: This grand cathedral is a significant religious site in Panama and features impressive architecture and religious artwork.
  • Plaza de la Independencia: Also known as Independence Square, this central plaza is surrounded by historic buildings and is a popular gathering place for locals and tourists.
  • Museo del Canal Interoceánico: This museum tells the story of the Panama Canal’s construction and its impact on the region. It’s a great place to learn about the history of this engineering marvel.
  • Teatro Nacional: The National Theater of Panama, built in the early 1900s, showcases architectural elegance and often hosts cultural events and performances.

Cultural Vibrancy: Old Town Panama has a lively cultural scene. You’ll find art galleries, theaters, and cultural centers where you can explore Panama’s artistic and creative side. The district hosts regular cultural events, including music festivals and art exhibitions.

Cuisine: The area is known for its diverse culinary scene. You can find a wide range of restaurants and cafes offering both traditional Panamanian dishes and international cuisine. Don’t miss trying local specialties like ceviche, plantains, and seafood.

Shopping: Old Town Panama is an excellent place for shopping, with boutique stores offering unique artisanal goods, handmade crafts, jewelry, and souvenirs. It’s a great spot to find one-of-a-kind gifts and keepsakes.

Nightlife: As the sun sets, Old Town Panama comes alive with a vibrant nightlife. There are bars, clubs, and lounges where you can enjoy live music, dance, and sip on cocktails.

Safety: Old Town Panama has undergone significant revitalization efforts in recent years, making it a safer and more tourist-friendly destination. However, as with any tourist area, it’s essential to be aware of your surroundings and take standard safety precautions.

We decided to catch the sunset from a rooftop at Terraza Casacasco, a delightful restaurant with a perfect view. The location was stunning, offering a panoramic view of Old Town with its European ambiance. The cocktails were amazing, the sushi incredibly fresh, and the live DJ set the mood just right. We witnessed the most beautiful sunset, although it was hot and humid, as the rainy season had just ended.

A Touch of Christmas Magic

Old Town Panama was beautifully decorated for Christmas, and it was a delight to soak in the festive atmosphere on our ride back to the hotel.

Mission Accomplished

The next day, it was time for an early morning start. Despite the quick 16-hour layover, I had achieved my status for 2022. It was a whirlwind of an adventure, and I thoroughly enjoyed my quick getaway with my pilot hubby, immersing ourselves in the culture and beauty of a new country. Panama City is definitely on our list to come back to explore with more time!

Until the next adventure, my fellow travelers! ✈️🌎🌅
