Greetings from my beautiful balcony of Hotel B Unique, where the turquoise waters of Cozumel stretch out before us like a shimmering paradise. I find myself reluctant to leave this tropical 🏝️ haven, but before the island’s magic fades into a cherished memory, I wanted to share our whirlwind adventure with you.
A Spontaneous Escape to Cozumel
Sometimes, the best trips are the ones you never saw coming. When my pilot hubby unexpectedly found himself with four consecutive days off, we decided to embrace spontaneity and explore a destination that had long piqued our curiosity—Cozumel, Mexico. While we’ve frequented Mexico several times, this charming island had remained uncharted territory for us.
Hotel B Unique: A Hidden Gem
Our choice of accommodation was a stroke of luck, thanks to a friend’s recommendation. Hotel B Unique, located on this picturesque island, was the perfect fit for our getaway. A small and intimate hotel, it exuded luxury and tranquility. As a bonus, breakfast was included, and the on-site restaurant, Xulha, had a great selection for breakfast, lunch & dinner.
Our Oceanfront king room, which we secured for just around $600 for three nights, felt like a steal. It was a sanctuary of comfort and style, complete with amenities that made our stay delightful. Filtered water was thoughtfully delivered to our room, and a coffee maker allowed us to savor our morning brew with ease. The bed was wonderfully cozy, room spacious, the air conditioning to our liking, and we appreciated the attentiveness of the staff, who provided impeccable service. Amenities such as robes, slippers & beach bag were also a pleasant touch at this price point.
One of the unique aspects of Hotel B Unique is its commitment to wellness. Yoga sessions and an on site spa provide opportunities for relaxation. Next time for sure.
Cozumel’s Enchanting History
Beyond the luxurious accommodations of Hotel B Unique, Cozumel itself has a rich and enchanting history. Long before it became a sought-after tourist destination, this island was sacred to the Mayan civilization. They dedicated Cozumel to Ixchel, the goddess of love, fertility, and the moon. Temples and shrines were erected in her honor, and it’s said that the Mayans made pilgrimages to Cozumel to seek her blessings.
Fast forward to the 16th century when Spanish explorers arrived, bringing with them a wave of change and upheaval. Cozumel, like much of the Yucatan Peninsula, became a focal point of the clash between the old and new worlds. The island was eventually deserted, its ancient temples and traditions buried beneath layers of history.
Today, Cozumel stands as a vibrant testament to its Mayan heritage and the resilience of its people. The island has not only embraced its role as a tourist haven but also cherishes its cultural roots, evident in the warmth and hospitality of its residents.

Hemingway’s: This delightful restaurant, named after the iconic writer, beckoned us with its charming atmosphere and breathtaking sunset views. The house DJ added a lively rhythm to our dining experience, making it a memorable evening along with some of the best espresso martinis we’ve had.
Los Mangales: A local favorite and family-owned treasure, Los Mangales delighted us with its Palomas & margaritas and an array of complimentary, hot, and fresh delights. From empanadas to conch ceviche, this spot showcased the culinary traditions of Cozumel.
Woody’s: Live music serenaded us at Woody’s, offering the perfect backdrop for a night of relaxation. It was the ideal place to unwind and soak in the island’s laid-back ambiance.
Buccanos: This restaurant offered a dining experience that was nothing short of extraordinary. With exquisite cuisine and a charming setting, it was the perfect culmination of our culinary adventures on Cozumel. More on this gem in a separate post! 😉
Cozumel, with its pristine beaches, welcoming atmosphere, and hidden gems like Hotel B Unique, already holds a special place in our hearts. Its rich history and warm hospitality remind us that even in the midst of paradise, there are layers of stories waiting to be uncovered.
