When my pilot hubby got a layover in San Francisco, I didn’t hesitate—bag packed, holiday vibes in full swing, and off we went to one of my favorite cities. San Francisco is magical year-round, but during the holidays? It’s like stepping into a glittering snow globe (minus the snow).
Home Base: Intercontinental Mark Hopkins
We stayed at the Intercontinental Mark Hopkins, perched atop Nob Hill. This historic hotel is pure old-school elegance with just the right amount of modern luxury. Fun fact: It’s been around since 1926 and has hosted everyone from Hollywood stars to politicians. Walking into the lobby, decked out with twinkling Christmas lights and festive garlands, felt like stepping back in time—in the best way.
Our room had sweeping views of the city, and the location is unbeatable. Nob Hill is one of San Francisco’s swankiest neighborhoods, and we were within walking distance of some of the city’s best spots. The hotel also has great amenities, but the real star is its famous rooftop lounge: Top of the Mark.

Sunset & Sips at Top of the Mark
We couldn’t miss a visit to Top of the Mark, the iconic lounge on the hotel’s top floor. This spot has been a San Francisco staple since 1939, and it’s easy to see why. The views are chef’s kiss—panoramic sights of the city, the Bay, and even the Golden Gate Bridge if you catch the right angle.
We got there just in time for sunset, and wow—watching the sky turn shades of pink and orange over the Bay is something I’ll never forget. We ordered a couple of cocktails (their martinis are legendary) and shared a light bite—a charcuterie board that hit the spot without ruining our appetite for dinner. If you’re in SF, this place is a must.

Dinner Goals: Aliment
For dinner, we strolled down to Aliment, a cozy little spot just a short walk from the hotel. The vibe here is laid-back yet stylish, with warm lighting and friendly staff that make you feel right at home.
The menu? Creative and comforting, with plenty of options for everyone (yes, even the pickiest eaters). We hit the happy hour jackpot and started with their crispy Brussels sprouts and vegan meatballs, which were so good we almost ordered another round. Their cocktails were just as impressive—I went with a refreshing gin-based drink, while hubby tried a whiskey sour twist that he’s still raving about.
For mains, we decided to keep it simple since we’d been snacking all day. Their small plates were perfect for sharing, and we left feeling satisfied but not stuffed—a rare win for us!

Festive Layover Magic
This quick layover in San Francisco turned out to be just what we needed—a little holiday magic, a lot of good food, and some stunning views to top it all off. Between the historic charm of the Intercontinental Mark Hopkins and the cozy vibe of Aliment, every moment felt special.

If you ever find yourself in San Francisco during the holidays (or anytime, really), don’t miss Nob Hill—it’s the perfect mix of charm and convenience. And trust me, Top of the Mark at sunset is one for the bucket list.
Until next time,
Wanderlusting Wifey
