A Fourth of July Staycation at Hotel ZaZa Museum District

Some of our favorite trips are the ones we don’t overplan—and this staycation was exactly that. When we found out Wayne was unexpectedly off for Fourth of July weekend, we decided to stay local and make it special. Once we confirmed our dog sitter could spend the whole weekend with Anya, the decision was easy: pack a bag and head into the city.

We booked a long weekend at Hotel ZaZa Museum District, one of our absolute favorite hotels in Houston and our go-to choice when we want something that feels indulgent without getting on a plane.

Location: Right in the Heart of It All

Hotel ZaZa’s Museum District location is hard to beat. You’re steps from Houston’s world-class museums, minutes from Hermann Park, close to the Medical Center, and still tucked away enough to feel like an escape. It’s one of those rare spots that feels both central and secluded at the same time.

For a holiday weekend, it was the perfect base—easy to get to, no airport chaos, and still felt like a true getaway.

A Last-Minute Upgrade That Made the Weekend

One of the highlights of this stay was a last-minute upgrade, thanks to Daisy Lopez, to one of ZaZa’s legendary Magnificent Seven suites—specifically, It Happened One Night. These rooms are in a category of their own and are a big reason Hotel ZaZa has such a devoted following.

The suite was dramatic, romantic, and unmistakably ZaZa—bold design, theatrical details, and a layout that feels more like a private residence than a hotel room.

From our room, we had a perfect view of the Fourth of July fireworks, likely coming from Hermann Park. Watching fireworks from a private balcony, cocktail in hand, without crowds or traffic, is exactly how a staycation should feel.

Amenities That Make It Feel Like a True Escape

We spent plenty of time enjoying the pool, which is always a highlight at ZaZa—lively without being overwhelming, stylish without trying too hard. Between pool time, balcony lounging, and slow mornings, the weekend unfolded at an unhurried pace that’s hard to achieve at home.

ZaZa’s amenities strike a rare balance: boutique-hotel personality with full-service comfort. From the attentive staff to the design-forward common areas, everything feels intentional.

A Bit of ZaZa History

Hotel ZaZa has long been known for doing things differently. It’s not a standard luxury hotel—it’s theatrical, playful, and unapologetically bold. Each room tells a story, and nowhere is that more evident than in the Magnificent Seven suites, which are individually themed, highly curated, and designed to feel immersive rather than generic.

That sense of personality is why ZaZa never feels dated, even after multiple stays. It evolves, but it never loses its edge.

Why We’ll Always Come Back

This staycation reminded us why Hotel ZaZa Museum District remains one of our favorite Houston hotels. It delivered everything we wanted from a Fourth of July weekend: spontaneity, comfort, celebration, and a little bit of magic—without ever leaving the city.

A long holiday weekend, a spectacular suite, fireworks from the balcony, and zero travel stress. Sometimes the best trips are right in your own backyard.
