Birthday in the Clouds: Puerto Vallarta at Hotel Mousai

This year’s birthday called for something indulgent, familiar, and undeniably beautiful—and Puerto Vallarta delivered.

We chose Hotel Mousai Puerto Vallarta, a place we’ve stayed before and one that still takes our breath away every single time. Perched dramatically on the side of a mountain, Mousai rises high above the coastline in sleek, modern towers that feel more like a luxury residence in the clouds than a traditional resort.

This stay, we booked a corner Ultra Suite in the North Tower, and it did not disappoint. Floor-to-ceiling glass, expansive views, and that unmistakable Mousai aesthetic—clean, modern, and unapologetically luxe. Waking up there feels suspended somewhere between the jungle and the ocean.

That said, transparency matters. During our September stay, the property was undergoing active construction, with two new towers currently being built. At times, this was distracting—particularly during the day when you’re trying to fully sink into the serenity Mousai is known for. It didn’t ruin the experience, but it did slightly interrupt the otherwise seamless atmosphere. The upside? Once construction is complete, this resort is going to be next-level, and we already know we’ll be back to experience it in its fully finished form.

The food and service, as always, were outstanding. Mousai continues to excel in dining—whether it’s refined fine dining, beautifully plated breakfasts, or cocktails enjoyed with a view that stretches endlessly across Banderas Bay. The staff is polished, attentive, and genuinely warm, striking that rare balance between professional and personal.

Location-wise, Mousai is a bit farther from the airport than many Puerto Vallarta resorts. The drive winds along the coast and into the hills, which adds time—but also drama. The topography here is a huge part of the experience: steep, lush, and vertical. This is not a flat, beachfront sprawl. Even getting to the beach requires a walk (and ride) down the hillside, which is easy enough but worth noting. It makes beach time feel intentional rather than incidental—and honestly, the elevated views more than make up for it.

As for arrival and departure, Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport remains one of the easiest international airports to navigate. Immigration is typically efficient, baggage moves quickly, and transportation—whether pre-arranged or grabbed on arrival—is straightforward and well-organized. Puerto Vallarta makes getting in and out refreshingly painless.

Despite the temporary construction, this birthday trip was exactly what it needed to be: relaxing, celebratory, and full of beauty. Mousai is still very new, very stunning, and very much worth the stay—and once those new towers are complete, it’s going to be even better.

Some birthdays are meant to be spent above it all.
